I failed.

I don’t really understand how , though. Aelleth 3

Blizzard just froze my account (Please cough up more money so you can play) without any notification. Why I find this strange?
Because I had already payed.

On 17/12/09 I got an email from them which made me very happy – they rewarded me with 7 free days because I have been inactive for a while. I had just read Gevlon’s post about the project so this was a very nice coincidence.
Today 28/12/09 they terminate my account without listing the last credit card payment I made? I added it 48 hours before the 7 free days ended.

This brings up a few questions:
- Where is my payment? Not on the payment history of my account as far as I can see.
- Why 28 when the promotion was to end at the 24th or 25th day of the month? Because of Christmas?
- Why in the middle of a perfect BRD run? Eh…

Sadly , I cannot check the transactions on my CC. I hope they didn’t draw any money. If they did I’d have to negotiate with their payment support guys for the third time. Argh , I should really go and buy a stack of prepaid cards and use that.

Whatever it is that took place tonight I hope it is gone tomorrow and I can continue leveling.

Adventures in Blackrock

The Blackrock Mountain. The impressive home of Nefarian and Ragnaros, as well as hundreds of their loyal servants, and even a heavy metal rock band. A place with the some of the longest instances WoW can offer, and a multitude of bosses. Exciting escort quests and deadly lava pools await inside for the curious adventurer.

Now availaible to you, the proud user of the newest LFG technology. Kind of loses the epic feeling a little bit, does it?

Tank, healer and dps - what else you need?

Tank, healer and dps - what else you need?

I was afraid that it’ll be really hard to find groups going for BRD, and I was surprised when it clearly wasn’t the case. There is just one little problem with the instance system – the instance is split into Lower and Upper city, similar as to how Maraudon is split into 3 parts in the interface. Most of the groups for Lower City just go straight to High Interrogator Gerstahn and break up after the kill, as he’s the end boss of Lower City. If your group does so, but then decides to continue and kill more bosses, you will be unable to add new players to your group, as technically you’ve already finished the dungeon you were in.

It was one of these runs where I’ve had the most fun in BRD. We killed the High Interrogator, continued with Ring of Law and Fineous Darkvine, lost one of the DPS just after that, made the Shadowforge keys for me and the tank, and lost the other DPS while getting back to the start. The LFG system made it quite clear that it won’t let us find new ones since we finished the instance, so all we had was a tank, healer and one melee dps. Rather than breaking up, we continued carefully towards the Grim Guzzler so me and the warrior could finish the two remaining quests.

It took a good while, and was definitely not easy, but we finally made it. On this run, I’ve managed to finish most of my quests for BRD, which in the end translated to one and a half of a level. All thanks to the tank, Moohnie from Doomhammer and the warrior, Nargarzhvog from Aszune. I wish I could run something again with both of you guys.

Another interesting adventure happened just today. I’ve queued for the random dungeon again, and it happened to be Lower Blackrock Spire. The tank asked if we want to see if we can do UBRS instead, and everyone agreed. Now, is it possible to clear the 10-man raid instance as a 5-man group? Definitely so, though being a good few levels below the mobs makes it a bit tricky.

We made it slowly to the last boss’ room, carefully pulling one pack at the time. The bosses weren’t really challenging, with the exception of The Beast, on which our healer got completely out of mana, so I’ve had to help with the healing a little bit.

The Beast. Or rather, its remains.

The Beast. Or rather, its remains.

We managed to kill it, and wiped just before Drakkisath on some of the trash pulls in that room. After that the tank decided it’s getting too hard for our levels (remember that we were all 57-58, with the trash mobs mostly on level 60), so we had to disband the group. Too bad, as it was getting interesting and I was really curious if we could finish the last boss as well.

All the little changes they don’t tell us about

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — Misaka @ 6:54 pm

See the Caverns of Time bit? This used to say "Steamwheedle Port" here.Remember the OOX Distress Beacons you can get from random mobs in Tanaris, Hinterlands and Feralas? Each one of them leads to an escort quest in that zone, and if you do them all, you can get a Mechanical Chicken pet.

Now, if you leveled at least one character to about level 50 back in the day (being somewhere around Classic or TBC), you probably remember that the quests were not necessarily easy and most classes needed a group to successfully do them, unless you outleveled them.

However, that’s not the case anymore. It seems that the patch 3.2 changed the quests, making the escorts significantly shorter. The chickens now fly back to their maker just after the first ambush (rather than after going all the way near the sea coast), making it much more easier to finish them all at the appropriate levels.

The Beginning..

Levels 32-44 , STV

Levels 32-44 , STV

Hellou , my name is  Aelleth and I am playing a brand new troll hunter for the
<Undergeared>
project.  This is my first horde character above level 20 and
is already the highest level hunter I’ve had.

Why did I join the guild?
I had stopped playing for a while because the game became too boring for me.
Which was great though , I had time to explore other activities. I watched a lot
of movies , played some other games and even got fresh air by traveling to another
country. However I knew it wasn’t a permanent break from the game. I cannot leave
the pixels I spend so much time on without doing something that matters.
And then a blogger which I’ve been following for a while proposed a challenge . . .

Why a hunter?
T’was a quite easy choice. Since it is forbidden to roll a class you have raid experience
with , I did exactly that.  My highest level characters are a rogue , a warrior and a feral druid. All melee. I’ve never been a ranged class in a raid. Also , I believe that the hunter class is the most entertaining class in the game. The situations you can create while leveling are complex and handling them without dying not only earns you loot and exp , but a
feeling of victory ,  fun. Well , it was a long time from when I last felt that in WoW.

Why write on this blog?
I’d like to keep track of this journey. Plus , I haven’t blogged before and English isn’t my
primary language , so it will be very useful for me.

I will post an interesting picture at the end of
each post , so here is the first one:

Halfway there

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — Misaka @ 1:22 pm

It’s the end of the first week of leveling Misaka and I’m already level 42. It might seem quite fast, considering that most of the new characters in the guild are still around level 20-25, but actually it wasn’t, as I’ve spent quite a good bit of time leveling my professions, and doing quests instead of instances.

So, here’s a little overview of the first half of the leveling process – maybe you guys will find it useful.

PvP

I’ve done a few Warsong Gulch battles, because I was thinking that I could grab some marks and get some nice caster gear – but on the lowest level WSG is totally awful. In the 11-19 level bracket an elemental shaman is mostly just a free HK for the enemies, especially if you a) play the class seriously for the first time ever, or b) encounter a hunter (as they can kill just about everything). I’ve stopped doing that quite fast, and since then I’ve grabbed better items than I could get.

Maybe I’ll try doing some Arathi Basin this week, as it’s easier to win and the belt for the shamans is quite nice for that level with int and crit rating. Unfortunately most of the gear availaible through low level PvP is not worth trying to get, especially if you can get dungeon blues much more easily.

Instances

Low level LFG attracts just as much of foolish people as the level 80 does. I’ve had a Balance specced druid trying to tank in bear form, but with caster gear (both cloth and leather), a group where the tanking feral druid decided that he doesn’t like tanking, so we can let the hunter pet tank, a paladin chainpulling with his healer out of mana and behind two corners because “cmon it’s only sm lib”, a hunter needing on spellpower cloth items, a group with two paladins that didn’t learn their ressurection spell, or half of a group getting lost in Uldaman. Well, maybe the last one is not that unusual after all…

You can start using the LFG at level 15 and you should do most of your leveling that way from that point. Up to about level 30 a full instance run should grant you 1/3 or 1/2 a level worth of experience points – and if you spend some time collecting and turning in the dungeon quests, you can easily get the other half, as they grant a huge amount of extra experience and there can be a lot of them. Later on the instances get significantly longer, but you can still skip some annoying zones like Desolace or Barrens.

If you use the random dungeon, you’ll also get a Satchel of Helpful Goods, for completing that run. Or at least they are called helpful, because 99% of what I’ve got had strength on it. Must be just bad luck, as it’s supposed to be random. Still, getting a blue ring or a necklace is pretty nice if you happen to get something with the at least some of the right stats on it, and you don’t have anything better in that slot.

Quests

I’m doing quests mostly when I don’t feel like running yet another dungeon, or while waiting for the LFG tool to set up a group for me. An exception from these are the class quests, and I really recommend everyone to do them. For shamans they give new totems (and we’re pretty useless without them), and after you get all four of them on level 30, you can exchange them for an equippable relic for your relic slot. For paladins, the most important quest is probably the level 10 quest for Redemption – it’s really stupid when you see yet another paladin that is unable to ressurect someone.

Unfortunately, these quests can be somewhat tiring, because for most of the classes they are still in their original form from the classic WoW. Some have been changed and you don’t need to do them anymore, like the druid’s form ones or the paladin’s mount quest, but most haven’t.

Remember that you don’t have to do every quest in the zone. If it sends you to another continent, or somewhere completely out of your way, you can save a lot of time by just abandoning it and doing something else instead.

Professions

Have two of them. It does not matter much which ones you’ll pick (though usually mining/herbalism and skinning go well while leveling), as we will most likely change them when the moment we hit 80 anyway, but there is little excuse for not having them.

I’m also saving part of what I gather, especially the less popular or more expensive items, in my bank for easier leveling of raiding professions later – sure, we can use the AH to level them, but will there be enough materials (and cheap enough) there when more people hit 80?

Don’t forget to learn cooking as well. You don’t have to level it, but just having it gives you access to cooking quests – they are usually easy to finish, grant extra experience, and you can always sell the recipes you get from them. Also, don’t forget that the feasts used as raiding food also require someone to have 425 skill in cooking to set them up.

First aid is another obvious choice – some classes don’t have heals at all, and even for ones that do, sometimes using a bandage is better. If you’re using LFG to run dungeons, you’ll end up with tons of clothes, more than enough to easily level this secondary profession.

Money and bearbutt

Filed under: Uncategorized — seth @ 10:57 am

Aaah so here I am, started a new *little* Tauren druid and god oh god I hate being poor, I hate having less then 50-100K at any given time to my disposal… but we are working on it, on that and on tanking. Bears = low TPS below lvl15-20 ish -_- especially when you have a rogue/hunter/warrior that wants to pull everything, doesn’t even matter that you’re already chainpulling everything up untill the boss… THEY need to pull and let me swipe my ass off…. ok enough ranting.

As seen at One Copper I’m going to set up a bank alt and start getting money on Gevlon’s realm… let’s see how that works out…

Here I am posting for another reason, I’m posting for the “social” interaction in the guild. First we need to make 2 distinct differences:
-when Gevlon is online
-when he isn’t

When he is, people actually don’t talk much, apart from class questions and rants about this or that quest. When he isn’t the guildchat is a bit more lenient. Yet not at all as in a “normal” Gchat. There are very very few “lols”, very few complaints and overall very proffesional. I did RFC with guildies, twice, and yet I had a bit of a problem of keeping aggro from a hunter lvl16 (me lvl13) everything went well, fast and without wipes… (the meelee healer let me die twice, and an overpull from me got me killed the second run though) the convo in the party also was kept to a minimum of tips and pointers, and questions about quests.

So if you are looking for a “social, good” time: gtfo.
If you are looking for 100 people that are going for an achievement (not in game) that is daunting, compelling and actually “hard” look us up. We will help you with quests and leveling, but don’t assume that we are “barrens chat”

Gnomeregan and various thoughts.

Just finished Gnomeregan for the first time since 2005 and had a couple of thoughts:

I am Tank! : I have not tanked an instance my level before, so it came as a surprise how easy I could hold aggro with a skill sequence of : Hand Of Reckoning -> Judgement -> Consecration. I guess having Righteous Fury activated helps, and so does tanking with a sword and board (though it was with a rather outdated green 13.9dps sword though). I never really had trouble until reaching the last boss in the instance: MekengineerMek. Call me new, but I didn’t understand why this particular boss was immune (literally the word “immune” popping up over his head)  to my taunts and went straight for the rogue. I also remembered from my shaman days in 2005 that the bombs were extremely devastating (See those faces on pillars? They pop out from there and make a beeline to your party), yet we managed to burn Mekengineer down so quick those bombs hardly made a dent on our hp.

Gnomeregan done!

Special Thanks : To our healer Palamanden from Bloodhoof(yeap, it’s a random PUG, i’m starting to think that WoW players in general are actually fairly competent).  He does have gear i thought paladins normally shouldn’t take though, mp5 cloth and leather gear, though I definitely had no complaints with his healing, and that throughout the entire run, he never dropped below 75% mana. If I recall correctly, he had 2053 mp and was at level 30.

Blue-Geared Hard Mode Raiding

My name is Fleurry and I’ll be playing a Rogue for the USA chapter of the Undergeared experiment. I’ll skip the personal introduction because I’m not particularly interesting to the vast majority of you. I will however introduce the blog series I’ll be writing here: Blue-Geared Hard Mode Raiding. Enjoy.

This Christmas I will be receiving a brand new Xbox 360 under the tree. In addition to finally entering the modern age of console gaming, I get to continue my new found obsession with Achievements. For me World of Warcraft is the same, and this particular experiment with “blue-geared” raiding doesn’t change that for me. I don’t think there is anyone involved with the project that doesn’t believe we can make quite a dent in the Wrath of the Lich King raiding scene with our self-imposed restriction. But hard modes are a different matter.

Over the next couple of weeks I want to examine the possibilities of Blue-Geared Hard Mode Raiding (BGHMR). This is a rather ambitious project that will have to be broken down into 3 essential parts.

1) Establishing a base line of gear for each class and role.

The main benefit of theorycrafting BGHMR is that the gear levels remain static. All rare gear is easily available. Determining the absolute best gear for each class/spec is likely to be subjective, especially for healing and tanking roles. However, each particular gear piece isn’t as important as simply establishing a statistical standard.

2) Define the parameters for completing each hard mode.

It’s one thing to say Patchwerk must be downed in 3 minutes to get the achievement. It’s a lot more helpful to say that each DPS needs to provide 4104 damage per second (assuming tanks do approximately 1750 DPS) to down him in the 10-man version. Patchwerk is obviously the easiest to model, but breaking down even complex hard mode challenges into modelable chunks makes it easier.

3) Run the Calculations.

Some hard modes are obviously going to be just undoable for our gear level. Sartharion + 3 Drakes is out of the question. But is one or even two drakes? This will take both theorycraft modeling and good old fashioned trial and error. The goal isn’t to try to provide a definitive answer as to whether we can beat a hard mode or not, but instead to give us a general idea if it is even possible.

So what’s the on agenda?

The first thing we need to accomplish is to determine what numbers we can realistically expect from our DPS in an ideal (i.e. Patchwerk) situation. In the next post I’ll identify the best-in-slot blue gear for a Rogue, and obtain some reasonable DPS numbers. We’ll continue this for each DPS spec and then move on to modeling what we can expect from the healers and tanks.

Eventually the guild will grow tired of farming old content, even if it is a bit more challenging. Pushing ourselves to the limit will not only keep things interesting, but provide even more tangible proof of why this guild exists in the first place.

And as a final note, please contribute in the comments or in the theorycraft section of the guild’s forums. I certainly don’t have a complete knowledge of all the classes in the game. And please double-check any math that I put on these posts. As an English-major, my math is suspect is to errors or outright lies.

Yet another introduction

Filed under: Uncategorized — Misaka @ 6:15 pm

Hello!

MisakaThis is Misaka, and I’ll be joining Zaeni on the epic quest of documenting our leveling process, and later on, the raiding. Misaka is my first shaman that passed the 10 levels mark, quite appropriate for the Undergeared project.

I’m leveling as Elemental, healing when needed in instances. Unfortunately, my healing in’t as good as I’d like it to be (due to lack of any points in Restoration talents), but I don’t dare to respec Misaka into a fulltime healer yet. Doing both instances and questing in the meantime is just more efficient in leveling, and also grants me an opportunity to level up my professions – and that wouldn’t be as easy or fast if I were trying to level as resto.

I joined the project because it’s a very interesting idea, and I’d like to try and see if it’s possible to succesfully clear all the normal content in Wrath with substandard levels of gear. So far we’re still at the leveling phase though, so we’ll see what we have when we get more people to level 80.

When I’m not playing Misaka, I’m a warrior tank for my Alliance guild on Deathwing-EU. We’re just a normal raiding guild, not awfully bad, but not hardcore either – just somewhere in the middle. If you’re interested in my other adventures, you can check out my own blog, the Angry Dwarfs.

As for other activities – I’m a big fan of console games, anime, books, comics and manga, as you could’ve probably guessed from the shaman’s name already. I’ve been playing WoW for a few years now, and started raiding in TBC with my rogue. Other than that, I’m working as a freelance webdeveloper, so in the holiday season I get even too much of free time.
