A slightly different direction to 80

I haven’t been able to log much recently, as I was preparing for a trip to the US(work related).  However, I have gotten tired of groups not checking to see if their healer(me) is behind them before pulling the next group of mobs, which usually results in me not fully utilising the refreshing drink i’m currently consuming and having to reach the inappropriately geared and overconfident tank before he’s pummelled to his doom by a horde of trash mobs.

So i’ve rolled a deathknight, and am actually finding the deathknight class mechanics interesting to play with. Instead of having a single limited resource that cannot be effectively regenerated unless you’ve specced deep into the prot tree, you have what typically amounts to a Settlers of Catan 2 level resource system, your runes are the resource cards of the Death, which are spent in different combinations to generate runic power (Victory points in Settlers of Catan)

From what I have read, the deathknight is supposedly able to tank or dps in all 3 talent trees, with tanking talents spread across all 3 talent trees. It is quite a change from the paladin talents, with Holy= healing tree, Prot=tanking tree,  and Retribution=DPS tree.

So would the deathknight be my new main? I’m not sure, but as long as i’m having fun with it playing solo or in groups (Tanking in hellfire ramparts is quite fun) I’ll be playing as Zaevi the DK.

Northrend Spree

My levelling adventure continues in Northrend, while I still have some free time left over the holidays. Currently I’m at level 73 and I’ve already finished most of the quests in Borean Tundra and about halfway done with Dragonblight.

Starting out in Borean Tundra might not be the best idea though – compared to Valiance Keep, Warsong Hold looks like it has been designed by some drunk and/or crazy developers, because I don’t believe any sane and sober person would design it that way. The place has about 5 levels, so turning in quests and finding trainers involves running around for a good few minutes just looking for them. There should also be a special award for making Horde start out with Scourge swarming around the fortress, while the Alliance can actually go somewhere, without being immediately assaulted by 3 mobs the very moment you step outside the city. Being level 68 at the time didn’t help at all.

Still, it’s much better than questing in Howling Fjord and helping the bloody undeads develop their blight plague to destroy everything with a pulse, something they’ve had brewing since the Tarren Mill quests (which I’ve skipped as well for the same reason). Unfortunately I still have to help them a bit in Dragonblight as a prelude to Wrathgate chain, but it’s only a few quests and they mostly involve killing the Scourge rather than some innocent villagers.

Once I finally levelled up a bit and got out to the next place, it was much better. Most of the Horde quests are similar to what I’ve done on my Alliance characters, so I didn’t have to spend too much time on them. And there are of course the neutral factions like Wyrmrest or Kirin Tor, which don’t change at all.

The instances on the other hand aren’t so good for levelling anymore. Sure, you get some quests for them, but there aren’t really that many of them, so they don’t give that much extra experience. I still do them anyway, just because the gear I get from quests is just awful for an Elemental shaman.

Unfortunately being a healer in the lower instances is not that easy – tanks that know the instances are pretty rare, and most of the time they continue their Outlandish manner of pissing me off, by running off to next pack without looking if I’m low on mana or not. I also had to buy Dual Spec already (actually I did it while I was still in Outland), because healing as Elemental was just spamming either Lesser Healing Wave or Chain Heal – not fun at all and sometimes even not enough if you also happen to have a crappy tank with you. There’s also less reasons to continue running the instances, as the first random dungeon awards you with 2 Emblems of Triumph, and the following ones only with gold and some experience, so I usually run the daily once a day (as you can use them to buy 500 reputation with Wyrmrest and other factions), and then only queue for the ones that still have some interesting loot.

Halfway there… and some PuGging tips

Zaeni has hit 40, and along with getting plate mail and new swift mount, with 40 points down the Holy tree, he finally has a nice new skill, Holy Shock.40finally I can see it being a way to put out extra healing near instantaneously, or following up with respectable damage using divine favour + Holy Shock.
Anyway, here’s some pugging tips that I picked up along the way to 40:

  • PuG early and often, but don’t forget the quests for the instance! A quick run around (if you don’t like checking the wiki) capital cities often give new quests for instances. Plus the loot off instance quest rewards are often much better than what you’d have
  • General Healer advice : Call for a mana break when the fight is under control and is about to end!  If I had a silver every time the tank runs off to find new mobs just because his mana/rage is still full without looking at the healer’s mana bar…
  • General Tank advice: Always check your healer’s mana bar AND that he’s within line of sight when pulling new mobs!
  • General Tank advice 2 : If that hunter/warlock/<new unreleased pet class> decides to tank a mob with his pet, let him. A pet can often  take the punishment from 1 mob by itself if it’s specced right, long enough to come and assist it. Unless of course the hunter pulled more and the others are making a beeline towards the hunter.
  • Specific Instance Annoyance: Uldaman. Make sure you designate 1 person to pick up both the Gni’kiv Medallion and  The Shaft of  Tsoi as in a cross server pug, you won’t be able to trade non-conjured items to combine into The Staff of Prehistoria. If 2 people pick each of the items up, you will not be able to summon a boss mob. The Gni’kiv Medallion can be found where the 3 dwarves are and the boss mob trogg Revelosh holds The Shaft of Tsoi.

Happy New Year to everyone!

p.s. Mirror’s Edge is quite fun, hopefully Mirror’s Edge 2 isn’t that far off.

p.p.s Steam sales are evil T.T

The Dark Portal, once again.

The Dark Portal, we meet once again.

Only the cute Christmas trees on the sides of Thrallmar’s entrance ruin the hellish mood a bit.

Adventures in Blackrock

The Blackrock Mountain. The impressive home of Nefarian and Ragnaros, as well as hundreds of their loyal servants, and even a heavy metal rock band. A place with the some of the longest instances WoW can offer, and a multitude of bosses. Exciting escort quests and deadly lava pools await inside for the curious adventurer.

Now availaible to you, the proud user of the newest LFG technology. Kind of loses the epic feeling a little bit, does it?

Tank, healer and dps - what else you need?

Tank, healer and dps - what else you need?

I was afraid that it’ll be really hard to find groups going for BRD, and I was surprised when it clearly wasn’t the case. There is just one little problem with the instance system – the instance is split into Lower and Upper city, similar as to how Maraudon is split into 3 parts in the interface. Most of the groups for Lower City just go straight to High Interrogator Gerstahn and break up after the kill, as he’s the end boss of Lower City. If your group does so, but then decides to continue and kill more bosses, you will be unable to add new players to your group, as technically you’ve already finished the dungeon you were in.

It was one of these runs where I’ve had the most fun in BRD. We killed the High Interrogator, continued with Ring of Law and Fineous Darkvine, lost one of the DPS just after that, made the Shadowforge keys for me and the tank, and lost the other DPS while getting back to the start. The LFG system made it quite clear that it won’t let us find new ones since we finished the instance, so all we had was a tank, healer and one melee dps. Rather than breaking up, we continued carefully towards the Grim Guzzler so me and the warrior could finish the two remaining quests.

It took a good while, and was definitely not easy, but we finally made it. On this run, I’ve managed to finish most of my quests for BRD, which in the end translated to one and a half of a level. All thanks to the tank, Moohnie from Doomhammer and the warrior, Nargarzhvog from Aszune. I wish I could run something again with both of you guys.

Another interesting adventure happened just today. I’ve queued for the random dungeon again, and it happened to be Lower Blackrock Spire. The tank asked if we want to see if we can do UBRS instead, and everyone agreed. Now, is it possible to clear the 10-man raid instance as a 5-man group? Definitely so, though being a good few levels below the mobs makes it a bit tricky.

We made it slowly to the last boss’ room, carefully pulling one pack at the time. The bosses weren’t really challenging, with the exception of The Beast, on which our healer got completely out of mana, so I’ve had to help with the healing a little bit.

The Beast. Or rather, its remains.

The Beast. Or rather, its remains.

We managed to kill it, and wiped just before Drakkisath on some of the trash pulls in that room. After that the tank decided it’s getting too hard for our levels (remember that we were all 57-58, with the trash mobs mostly on level 60), so we had to disband the group. Too bad, as it was getting interesting and I was really curious if we could finish the last boss as well.

Halfway there

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — Misaka @ 1:22 pm

It’s the end of the first week of leveling Misaka and I’m already level 42. It might seem quite fast, considering that most of the new characters in the guild are still around level 20-25, but actually it wasn’t, as I’ve spent quite a good bit of time leveling my professions, and doing quests instead of instances.

So, here’s a little overview of the first half of the leveling process – maybe you guys will find it useful.

PvP

I’ve done a few Warsong Gulch battles, because I was thinking that I could grab some marks and get some nice caster gear – but on the lowest level WSG is totally awful. In the 11-19 level bracket an elemental shaman is mostly just a free HK for the enemies, especially if you a) play the class seriously for the first time ever, or b) encounter a hunter (as they can kill just about everything). I’ve stopped doing that quite fast, and since then I’ve grabbed better items than I could get.

Maybe I’ll try doing some Arathi Basin this week, as it’s easier to win and the belt for the shamans is quite nice for that level with int and crit rating. Unfortunately most of the gear availaible through low level PvP is not worth trying to get, especially if you can get dungeon blues much more easily.

Instances

Low level LFG attracts just as much of foolish people as the level 80 does. I’ve had a Balance specced druid trying to tank in bear form, but with caster gear (both cloth and leather), a group where the tanking feral druid decided that he doesn’t like tanking, so we can let the hunter pet tank, a paladin chainpulling with his healer out of mana and behind two corners because “cmon it’s only sm lib”, a hunter needing on spellpower cloth items, a group with two paladins that didn’t learn their ressurection spell, or half of a group getting lost in Uldaman. Well, maybe the last one is not that unusual after all…

You can start using the LFG at level 15 and you should do most of your leveling that way from that point. Up to about level 30 a full instance run should grant you 1/3 or 1/2 a level worth of experience points – and if you spend some time collecting and turning in the dungeon quests, you can easily get the other half, as they grant a huge amount of extra experience and there can be a lot of them. Later on the instances get significantly longer, but you can still skip some annoying zones like Desolace or Barrens.

If you use the random dungeon, you’ll also get a Satchel of Helpful Goods, for completing that run. Or at least they are called helpful, because 99% of what I’ve got had strength on it. Must be just bad luck, as it’s supposed to be random. Still, getting a blue ring or a necklace is pretty nice if you happen to get something with the at least some of the right stats on it, and you don’t have anything better in that slot.

Quests

I’m doing quests mostly when I don’t feel like running yet another dungeon, or while waiting for the LFG tool to set up a group for me. An exception from these are the class quests, and I really recommend everyone to do them. For shamans they give new totems (and we’re pretty useless without them), and after you get all four of them on level 30, you can exchange them for an equippable relic for your relic slot. For paladins, the most important quest is probably the level 10 quest for Redemption – it’s really stupid when you see yet another paladin that is unable to ressurect someone.

Unfortunately, these quests can be somewhat tiring, because for most of the classes they are still in their original form from the classic WoW. Some have been changed and you don’t need to do them anymore, like the druid’s form ones or the paladin’s mount quest, but most haven’t.

Remember that you don’t have to do every quest in the zone. If it sends you to another continent, or somewhere completely out of your way, you can save a lot of time by just abandoning it and doing something else instead.

Professions

Have two of them. It does not matter much which ones you’ll pick (though usually mining/herbalism and skinning go well while leveling), as we will most likely change them when the moment we hit 80 anyway, but there is little excuse for not having them.

I’m also saving part of what I gather, especially the less popular or more expensive items, in my bank for easier leveling of raiding professions later – sure, we can use the AH to level them, but will there be enough materials (and cheap enough) there when more people hit 80?

Don’t forget to learn cooking as well. You don’t have to level it, but just having it gives you access to cooking quests – they are usually easy to finish, grant extra experience, and you can always sell the recipes you get from them. Also, don’t forget that the feasts used as raiding food also require someone to have 425 skill in cooking to set them up.

First aid is another obvious choice – some classes don’t have heals at all, and even for ones that do, sometimes using a bandage is better. If you’re using LFG to run dungeons, you’ll end up with tons of clothes, more than enough to easily level this secondary profession.

Gnomeregan and various thoughts.

Just finished Gnomeregan for the first time since 2005 and had a couple of thoughts:

I am Tank! : I have not tanked an instance my level before, so it came as a surprise how easy I could hold aggro with a skill sequence of : Hand Of Reckoning -> Judgement -> Consecration. I guess having Righteous Fury activated helps, and so does tanking with a sword and board (though it was with a rather outdated green 13.9dps sword though). I never really had trouble until reaching the last boss in the instance: MekengineerMek. Call me new, but I didn’t understand why this particular boss was immune (literally the word “immune” popping up over his head)  to my taunts and went straight for the rogue. I also remembered from my shaman days in 2005 that the bombs were extremely devastating (See those faces on pillars? They pop out from there and make a beeline to your party), yet we managed to burn Mekengineer down so quick those bombs hardly made a dent on our hp.

Gnomeregan done!

Special Thanks : To our healer Palamanden from Bloodhoof(yeap, it’s a random PUG, i’m starting to think that WoW players in general are actually fairly competent).  He does have gear i thought paladins normally shouldn’t take though, mp5 cloth and leather gear, though I definitely had no complaints with his healing, and that throughout the entire run, he never dropped below 75% mana. If I recall correctly, he had 2053 mp and was at level 30.
